College Council Minutes

At the July Meeting the Council considered:

  • Funding allocations made to the College as part of the current Australian Government stimulus package; while some funds were allocated, major maintenance issues identified by the College were not funded. Priorities have been given to the computer area for the Visual Arts GAT program and refurbishment for teaching areas with most need. Council members expressed concern that the significant needs of the college were not being met.
  • Council members were briefed on the current shifts in the Department of Education and have a watching brief on the Empowering Schools changes that are being implemented.
  • In a similar vein, the Council is keeping a watchful on the arrival of the half-cohort into secondary schools in 2010 and impacts on staffing.
  • The 2009-2011 Strategic Plan was tabled for discussion at the next meeting. Council members welcome feedback and comments on the Strategic Plan.
  • Also taken on notice for future discussion is the 2014 College Centenary. If you have ideas for making this Centenary memorable please make contact with members through the secretary. Some preliminary ideas include commissioning a play; setting up a media based festival; expanding on the existing histories of the College.
  • Council is always pleased to hear of success stories of former students. For example, Ewan Leslie has just opened in The Promise at Belvoir in Sydney.

Projects supported by the Council:

  • Each year the Council asks parents for a financial donation that contributes to a range of projects. Just as the Council made a significant contribution to the refurbishment of the Quadrangle (in partnership with the P&C), in 2009 there has been a significant contribution to the ongoing project of air-conditioning the school.
  • Council has also reserved funds to support realignment of the entrance to the College to address current identified problems of students and cars competing for access.
  • At a policy level, the members of Council contributed to the development of the College values (highlighted on the web site).
  • At a more immediate level, the Council allocates funds to support acknowledging the efforts of teachers and contributing to a positive climate in the College.
