Music Theatre is offered at John Curtin College of the Arts as part of a unique arts infused curriculum and arts enrichment program.
About the program
The Music Theatre program is a dynamic program that combines dance, drama and music that will provide your child with the skills to create, present and analyse music theatre.
Students develop their skills through practical workshops and theatrical study. They receive specialist tuition in music knowledge and theory, music theatre history and analysis, dramatic and vocal work, and tap and jazz dance.
Performance in an important aspect of this program and your child will take part in a variety of productions. They will have the opportunity to work with industry artists who bring their real like experience to the program. They will also attend a variety of music theatre performances, take part in excursions and develop a critical understanding of the Arts.
The program is designed to enrich, extend and accelerate your child's learning.
Selection process
Selection of students is through workshop, interview and school reports. Students are also required to sit the Selective Entrance Test coordinated by the Department of Education and Training. Arts selection is not based on this test, but it is used to develop an appropriate academic curriculum.
Selection criteria:
Music theatre aptitude demonstrated through:
- originality and creativity of ideas and use of elements of music theatre (elements of dance, drama and music)
- capacity to sequence and retain dance phrases
- capacity to improvise and interpret text including ability to extend a text and use elements of drama
- capacity to analyse set tasks and respond to ideas and instructions with imagination, cooperation and openness
- achievement in aural acuity as demonstrated through playing or singing in a music theatre context
Academic and other achievement as indicated through school reports, targeted teacher reports and interview.
