Registered Training Organisation
Artsmedia focus
John Curtin College of the Arts is a visionary Registered Training Organisation (RTO) accredited against the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) to deliver Certificate I in Creative Industries and Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media), mainly to Artsmedia students in Years 10 and 11. Most students will complete the full Certificate course while others will achieve a Statement of Attainment for the Units of Competency that they complete which assist in preparing them for employment.
As an RTO, the college provides students with exposure to the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector with the opportunity to achieve qualifications in the media industry. As a specialist Arts College delivering VET programs in Artsmedia, and with an increasing demand for qualified people to join the workforce, it is important that students are able to prepare for employment by having the necessary underpinning knowledge and skills to participate in the industry.
Students undertaking specialist development in Artsmedia are able to achieve specific industry qualifications in conjunction with completing the requirements of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). It is intended that in future years college students will continue to achieve at least at the above levels.
Certificate I and Certificate II in Live Production
Theatre and Events
The achievement of full certificate courses in Vocational Education and Training is also completed through auspicing arrangements with other RTOs to deliver Certificate I and Certificate II in Live Production, Theatre and Events (auspicing with National Corporate Training).
Certificate I in Live Production, Theatre and Events allows learners to develop basic knowledge and skills for the live production, theatre and events industries. Certificate II is designed to reflect the role of individuals who perform a range of mainly routine tasks and who work under direct supervision. It is a flexible entry-level qualification, which can be customized to meet a broad range of industry needs.
The achievement of Certificate I and Certificate II is offered to Gifted and Talented Arts students undertaking enrichment classes in Year 10 and to Stagecraft students. The workplace context for these qualifications is varied and guides the selection of elective units (front of house, lighting, audio, staging).
Other full certificate courses in VET are also completed through auspicing arrangements with other RTOs to deliver a number of Units of Competency in Hospitality (auspicing with Challenger TAFE), and a further number of Units of Competency embedded in the Work Studies program (auspicing with National Corporate Training).
School Based Traineeships (SBT's)
John Curtin College of the Arts offers School Based Traineeships which are aimed at vocationally oriented students with dual goals of increasing school retention rates and improving career and employment opportunities. Students in Year 11 and in Year 12 have the opportunity to access SBT's pending on employer availability.
Student Assessments are competency based with grading of Competent where the industry standard has been met or Not Yet Competent where the participant is working towards the industry standard. The standards used by the college are from the national accredited training packages.
The trainers and assessors used on these programs require the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training. These competencies are in addition to their industry qualifications and experience (e.g Photography, Film and Television, Radio and Broadcasting, Hospitality, Business and Financial Management).
