 Academic Excellence Program

Academic excellence at John Curtin College of the Arts is a priority. More than half the students enrolled in a Gifted and Talented program are in our Academic Excellence Program.

Academic Excellence Program

Academic Excellence programs for Gifted and Talented students in the humanities, mathematics and science were established in 1990. The programs are designed to extend and enrich learning through engaging students in an exciting integrated cross curriculum approach that utilises learning technologies. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of extra curricular activities according to their interests. Students may be enrolled in any combination of these programs.

The Academic Excellence Program offers gifted students:

  • A supportive, nurturing and flexible classroom environment
  • The opportunity to work with other academically able students
  • Specially trained teachers

Entry to the program:

The Academic Excellence Program is available to any John Curtin College of the Arts student who excels academically. Students in Gifted and Talented programs or the Soccer Excellence Program can participate in this program at the same time as their arts or soccer program.

Gifted and Talented Arts students are offered a place in the college's AEP course if their score in the Selective Entrance Test is above the benchmark. This test is conducted by the Department of Education and Training as part of the Gifted and Talented Programs selection process.

All students entering Year 8 sit the college's aptitude test in the year before they commence. This test evaluates their academic potential and is used to develop an academic program for each student. Students who perform well in this test may also be considered for placement in the AEP course.
