The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
Years 10, 11 and 12
By: Bertolt Brecht
Directed by: Fiona Tholet
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is an American gangster movie, think Al Capone meets Richard III, in Bertolt Brecht’s allegorical satire. The play explores Adolf Hitler’s rise to power and is filtered through the story of a bunch of hoodlums attempting to take over the cauliflower trade in 1930s Chicago. Eventually they annexe the market in nearby Cicero, too. Replace Cicero with Austria, and consider an extended Monty Python sketch with Shakespearean tragedy thrown in for an evening of surprises. The final, chilling moments remind us that this is no laughing matter.
