Dr Jane Goodall visits Roots and Shoots students

June 22, 2017

Dr Jane Goodall recently visited the college to meet with members of our Roots and Shoots Club and to make a film recording about her Roots and Shoots program to distribute across Australia.

As one of the first schools in Australia to implement her Roots and Shoots program, she shared stories about her work as a world renowned  ethologist, humanitarian, conservationist and UN Messenger of Peace.

Our Year 12 Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) students Jacob Brown, Angille Tan and Taye Wickland helped film a promotional video that the Jane Goodall Institute will show globally.

The Roots and Shoots Club was founded by Dr. Goodall in 1991 and aims to bring youth together to work on environmental, conservation and humanitarian issues. There are now 90 chapters worldwide. It was a special privilege for members of the club in the college to meet with Dr. Goodall whilst she was at the college.

Dr Goodall ended her visit to Perth by attending the Roots and Shoots State conference at Perth Zoo on Saturday. Students were able to hear about her life as a scientist and environmental activist and draw inspiration from her story.

What have our students achieved through the John Curtin Roots and Shoots Club?

  • Students participated in the Australian Youth Climate Coalition Conference in Fremantle/Cockburn for the third year in a row. The Switched on School Summit is a youth leadership program that aims to inspire and empower secondary school students to come together to take action on climate change.
  • As part of the Plastic Free July Challenge there was a Learning Centre display to make a pledge, a raffle and a beach clean up.
  • Vertical Gardens were made from heat treated recycled pallets and planted with herbs, vegetables and strawberries. Bunnings supplied all materials and sent two team members to help with the construction. This is part of an ongoing Roots and Shoots initiative to provide produce for use in Food Technology and add greenery to the college grounds.
  • Partnership with Coast Care continued with students involved in dune rehabilitation, seedling planting and a beach clean-up at Port Beach.
  • Designed a Peace Pole for children’s playground at Perth Zoo.
  • Sponsored an orang-utan at Perth Zoo and a chimpanzee called Anzac through the Jane Goodall Foundation.
  • Other activities included maintaining an edible garden and citrus grove, selling the college’s reusable water bottles, and providing recycling stations for batteries, mobile phones and oral health care products.
