Double the honours for WAM Song of the Year

July 11, 2019

West Australia Music’s Awards night celebrates the finest local talent on the music scene and this year two musicians from our John Curtin community took home honours.

Year 8 student Ava Sharp won the West Australia Music (WAM) Song of the Year in the Schools and Under 14 category for her single ‘Shattered Heart.’

Ava has been writing music since she was 6 years old and wrote ‘Shattered Heart’ when she was just 12 years old.

Music teacher Jesse Millea’s band Elderflower won the Song of the Year in the the Heavy/Metal category.

WAM’s Song Of The Year is an annual competition that promotes the rich songwriting talent of Western Australian artists and embraces contemporary music of all genres, levels and ages.

Each year industry panels nominate and vote across 30+ categories to uncover the very best WA music has to offer, with public voting across five award categories.

In 2019 there were more than 14,000 entries in the 17 different categories.

Healthway will provide $280,000 to WAM over the next two years to promote the Act-Belong-Commit message through programs including the Song of the Year Awards.

Have a listen to Ava’s song here.
