Our Gifted and Talented Media Arts Program provides students with the skills and knowledge to excel in media, journalism, radio, film and television production.

The program also provides experiences in a range of specialisations including visual and audio editing, audio recording and manipulation, filming and digital photography, script writing, directing, radio and print media.

Media Arts students participate in the ATAR Media Production and Analysis course in upper school, which prepares them for university entrance, TAFE entry, and/or industry employment. Students can also achieve specific industry qualifications including the nationally accredited CUA20220 Certificate II in Creative Industries: Media.

Students have the opportunity to showcase their work at least twice per year in Film Festivals and participate in extension activities including industry simulations, exhibitions, competitions and filming live events and productions.

Lower School Program

The Gifted and Talented Media Arts Program focuses on preparing students for the media industry by building up a strong foundation of skills and abilities. Working with different mediums allows students to appreciate their advantages, while team and independent projects develop their understanding of the production process.

The program also provides experiences in a range of specialisations including video and audio editing, audio recording and manipulation, filming and digital photography, script writing, directing, radio and print media.

Student centred learning is constructed through complex and open-ended rich tasks, offering opportunities to achieve at a variety of levels in a range of contexts.

From Year 7, students are able to access media equipment as well as props and costumes from our very well stocked department, to enable them to engage in production shoots outside of school. Students are required to develop resourcefulness, forward thinking and group working skills in these years.

Upper School Program

Media Arts students can enrol in the ATAR Media Production and Analysis course in upper school. This will prepare them for university entrance, TAFE entry, and/or industry employment, while offering enrichment, extension and acceleration.

Students can also achieve specific industry qualifications including the nationally accredited CUA20220 Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) through John Curtin College of the Arts (50549).

This is a two year course offered to students in Year 11 and includes script writing, camera work, vision and sound editing, occupational health and safety, creating short films, radio programs and multimedia as well as computer software and hardware, media industry knowledge, and access to industry experts.

Further details on the ATAR Media Production and Analysis course and the CUA20220 Certificate II in Creative Industries (Media) can be found in the Year 11 and Year 12 Curriculum Handbooks.

Upper school students continue to work outside of school on their production work and have access to more specialised equipment. Many students build good working relationships with Drama students, resulting in both high production standards involving quality performances.

Exhibitions and Productions

The Media Arts Film Festivals showcase the works of students to celebrate their achievements across the year. Students have the opportunity to showcase work at least once per year.

Apart from the range of extension excursions and incursions run over the course of the year, there are two major camps. These involve production film shoot camps for Year 10/11 (combined) and also Year 12. Camps are generally run by the students, with professionals from the industry as guides. These professionals form the backbone to the program and visit the students at school on regular occasions to both teach technique as well as provide ongoing feedback on students own works.

Media Arts students participate in extension activities that are industry simulations and also link in with community groups. These include location shoots, academic presentations, volunteer services and promotions, exhibitions, filming live events and productions, and festival launches. Students are given opportunities to create and edit promotional videos for College events and archives. Student productions are entered into local, State and national competitions including the ATOM Awards.
