John Curtin College of the Arts warmly welcomes Evan Floyd as our new Associate Principal – Initiatives and Directions. Evan brings a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation to this crucial role, where he will play a key part in shaping the future of our College. We are thrilled to have him join our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our students and staff.
Role at the College: Associate Principal – Initiatives and Directions. Evan’s role focuses on ensuring the smooth operation of the College and seamlessly managing transitions related to new Department and College initiatives. This includes student information systems for teaching and learning, timetabling, and human resource management for academic staff, specifically appointments, pay, and leave.
Educational Background: BSc (UWA), DipEd (UWA).
Professional Experience: Evan’s career in education spans four schools. He began as a graduate teacher at Narembeen DHS, teaching agriculture and science for three years, which included managing the school farm. He then spent ten years at Kent St SHS, initially teaching Science (Physics) and serving as Year Coordinator. His responsibilities grew to include Program Coordinator, Head of Department, and Deputy Principal, leading the school through initiatives such as implementing the Curriculum Framework and managing ICT (LWICT). He was promoted to Deputy Principal Operations (Timetable, Staffing, ICT) at Leeming SHS, where he also initiated the Science and Technology Academy approved specialist program. In 2007, Evan returned to his alma mater, Melville SHS, as Deputy Senior School (10-12), continuing his focus on timetabling, staffing, and ICT.
In 2017, Evan was seconded to central office, leading the scheduling for webSIS (primary and secondary timetable, cover, events). Following the project’s conclusion, he worked with a small team to develop a proof of concept, deploying an integrated SEQTA cloud instance to four senior high schools. This work contributed to the development of Program Kaartdijin, which Evan led from its inception through procurement, deployment, and the interim solution rollout to over 200 schools. He also laid the groundwork for the full solution, designed to replace all SIS functionality (enrolments, timetabling, and finance) and enable schools to operate more effectively. This involved defining functional requirements, scope, and leading the configuration and readiness of the solution. While intending to return to Melville SHS, the opportunity to join John Curtin College of the Arts and guide the College through the Kaartdijin transition, along with leading the evolution of our timetabling practices, proved too compelling to resist.
Role Breakdown:
- Timetable: Development and consultation, rooming, innovative directions, schedules and timelines, subject selections online.
- Kaartdijin: Implementation, training, transition, and preparedness.
- Information and Communication Technologies: For learning and teaching.
- Staffing: Staff leave, recruitment management, workforce planning, HRMIS, Year 11 and 12 support.
Personal Interests: Evan has a passion for cycling. He can often be found riding, planning rides, or working on his bikes, particularly his mountain bikes. He also enjoys road and gravel cycling. He has even undertaken solo unsupported cycling trips between Perth and Denmark.
