We take students on an enriching journey to strengthen literacy and communication skills and to transform students to be well-rounded individuals who understand different perspectives.

Students develop interpersonal and intercultural skills for global competence so they may understand how language and culture shape world views.

At John Curtin College of the Arts we are proud to be able to provide our students with an ATAR course for those who are interested to build on the foundation of their learning in lower school. At this level, we also offer specialised in class tutoring and international sessions with language assistants in Italy.

Learning Italian at John Curtin College of the Arts is compulsory in Years 7 and 8. Our Year 7 & 8 courses are structured to give students an idea of what learning a second language involves as well as some basic grammar before choosing whether or not to continue beyond Year 8.

Our students in Years 9, 10, 11, and for the first time in 2022, Year 12 have a number of exciting opportunities in and outside the classroom to supplement their language lessons. These include dubbing films, cultural excursions and of course, the fantastic whole school collaborative STEM event known as Una Festa in Piazza. This event has become an annual tradition and it attempts to recreate an Italian inspired town square complete with food, entertainment and activities. Students and staff from various learning areas collaborate to to feed, entertain and inspire our entire cohort. This wonderful cultural experience doesn’t stop at the College, the Festa even plays host to visiting classes from local primary schools.

Italian has a long tradition at John Curtin College of the Arts due to its relevance to the Arts and the Fremantle community. Our courses are infused with arts including music and film. We also include features from sport, food, fashion and history. More information about the course can be found in our curriculum handbook.

Erica Letizia is our Languages coordinator and her passion for teaching students Italian continues to bring out the best in our students year after year.
