John Curtin College of the Arts’ Specialist Football Program is Western Australia’s leading Football Program in secondary schools.

Perth Glory FC Academy School

John Curtin College of the Arts is proud to be in a partnership with Perth Glory FC. We provide students with an elite, professional coaching environment and transferable life skills that broaden career pathways and opportunities.

We are one of only four Perth Glory FC Academy Schools in Western Australia. Academy Schools extend development opportunities throughout the community and into schools.

Football Program students will have access to:

  • Weekly strength and conditioning sessions with an individualised training plan,
  • regular ‘drop-in’ sessions with highly qualified Perth Glory coaches,
  • participation in Glory football school events,
  • Perth Glory nutritionists and sports psychologists,
  • expert strength and conditioning and goalkeeper coaches,
  • visits from Glory staff within Football Enrichment lessons,
  • football specific facilities including well maintained grass pitches, interactive classrooms and fitness suite,
  • links to tertiary and industry bodies.

Football Program

The College was the first school in Western Australia to offer football as a specialist subject and we have delivered a high quality, specialist football program since 1990.

As of 2023, the College has 19 current students participating within the junior and senior Perth Glory academy, 17 girls in the Football West National Training Centre Girls program and two students in the Australian women’s national under-17 Junior Matildas.

Our program has produced over 25 international representatives, with several graduate students now earning a living playing in Australia or internationally. Many graduates have reached senior national premier league level in male and female competitions, with numerous State and National team representatives at various age levels.

Overview

Our Football Program provides students with high level technical instruction paired with a game-centred approach to coaching. The program sequentially moves through practices geared to the appropriate phase of learning, becoming increasingly challenging as students mature. Our program is supported by the Football Federation of Australia, Perth Glory FC and Football West.  Our program focus includes:

  • Technical Development of the four core skills – 1v1; striking the ball; running with the ball; 1st touch,
  • Athletic Development – weekly sessions targeting football specific components of fitness,
  • Tactical Development – importance of roles and responsibilities and structures and strategies,
  • Mental Development – sports psychology and game intelligence.

Lower school program

Students participate in four hours of skill development per week and goalkeepers receive an extra hour a week with a specialist goalkeeping coach. All coaching sessions reflect the Football Federation of Australia’s National Curriculum.

Enrichment

Years 7 to 10 students receive two hours a week of Football Enrichment, a classroom-based program with a focus on topics allied to the development of excellent athletes and good footballers. Topics include nutrition, sports psychology, football history, laws of the game, structures and strategies of football.

The theoretical course complements the practical program and is designed to help students become better prepared footballers physiologically and tactically. It also provides students with vital skills that support their work in other subject areas.

The Enrichment Program in lower school provides all students the opportunity to work with a range of peers in different learning environments, allowing them to discover new opportunities and collaborations.

Upper school program

All students complete the two year SIS20115 Certificate ll in Sport and Recreation in partnership with our Registered Training Organisation iVET. This course covers units such as Health and Safety, First Aid, Sports Coaching and Performing Sport at a high level.

Students may choose to study ATAR Physical Education Studies, which can provide credit towards university entry.

All students will complete the Football Federation Australia Training, Coaching Accreditation, Senior First Aid and the Level 4 Referees Accreditation.

Coaching and teaching

Students in the program receive coaching and teaching from specially selected teachers who have exhibited a high level of proficiency in both football and teaching. Our Athletic Development Program is designed and delivered by the Perth Glory Academy coaching staff.

Throughout the school year guest coaches are invited to the College to share their knowledge, skills and experience with students. This provides flexibility and diversity to the program while enabling students to experience different coaching styles.

The experienced coaches have a range of qualifications including:

  • the Football Federation of Australia and Asian Football Confederation A, B and C Licences
  • Instructor’s Licence, and
  • community based accreditation.

All coaches have been involved in State teams. In addition to being our Head Coach, Gavin Brown who commits his time outside of the College to the Perth Glory Academy.
