On Friday 30 June the Curtin Theatre was taken over by the Music Department for Battle of the Bands 2023! It was a  massive day of rocking out with outstanding originals and classic covers from a large range of performing groups from Years 7-12. Eleven bands competed for the three coveted places with prizes supplied by Mega Music and Yamaha.

Throughout the competition students enjoyed special guest performances from current and former JCCA students, as well as our very own Ms Millea and Mr Brain!

Performers were treated to a workshop delivered by WA Music (WAM) and a Q&A session with the Music Industry guest judges. We were honored to welcome Mega Music Education Rep and former bassist of Dyscord Raffe Houston; Professional Musician Steve Judd, drummer of Karnivool; Electronic Producer, DJ and Performance Artist BEXX (Rebecca Price) of Project BEXX to guest judge on the day in addition to welcoming back 2019 Specialist Music graduate Molly Bjelan and 2021 Specialist  Music Theatre graduate Mia Frazer.

Mia has a diploma of Music Theatre from WAAPA and is currently developing her own musical with them. Since graduating from JCCA in 2019, specialist music program alumni Molly has continued to dedicate herself to her passion for music and is currently working with WAM. Molly was responsible for much of the work behind this year’s WAM Fest.

The Mad Hatters

Every band that graced the Curtin Theatre stage brought something new, from Aerosmith and Joan Jett to Fleet Foxes and Katy Perry, all competitors made sure the judges had their work cut out for them.

After a long and difficult deliberation the results were in…(drumroll please)

In third place, receiving a $150 Mega Music voucher was Melomane.

Coming in second, winning a $350 Mega Music voucher was Who Hired These Guys?

And finally, the winners of Battle of the Bands 2023 were Rocks & Rhubarb who took home the first place prize of a $500 recording studio voucher!

All prizes were sponsored by Mega Music and Yamaha. Winners will also have future performance opportunities at the school and externally at local events.

A huge thank you and congratulations to all who made this event possible! Extra special thanks and acknowledgement go to Level 3 Classroom Music Teacher,  Jesse Millea, who worked tirelessly to make Battle of the Bands 2023 such a fantastic day.
